Cluster leader of the cluster “Applied Mechanical Behaviour” of the Materials innovation institute M2i and University of Twente’s Professor Ton van den Boogaard has been appointed president of Esaform, the leading European organization in the field of material forming. He took up this post during Esaform’s annual specialist conference in the French city of Nantes.
Ton van den Boogaard is Professor of Nonlinear Solid Mechanics at the Faculty of Engineering Technology (CTW). He develops models for the mechanical behaviour of materials and applies his expertise across a range of areas, such as helping to drive the smart factory concept.
“I feel very honoured, this is a prestigious position,” says Prof. Van den Boogaard. “And I’m getting down to work straight away, because I want to strengthen Esaform’s ties with industry.”
Esaform has about 300 members. While these are mainly from Europe, the US and Asia are also represented. Its focus is on research into forming materials such as metals, polymers and composites. The industrial partners involved are from the automotive, aerospace and metal industries.
Esaform and Ton van den Boogaard are also working on a partnership with The Japan Society for Technology of Plasticity, Esaform’s Japanese counterpart in the field of plastic forming.
During his inaugural lecture last year, Prof. Van den Boogaard explained how the University of Twente can play an important part in the rise of smart factories.
